Biography
Hanqi Zhang is a bilingual Director of Photography, cinematographer, and video producer based in Sydney. He has over five years of experience working across narrative short films, internationally distributed short-form series, commercial advertising, and brand-driven visual content.
His work explores how images shape emotion, rhythm, and the relationship between story and viewer within specific narrative contexts. Through composition, lighting, and camera movement, he develops a visual language that prioritises emotional density and narrative intention.
In recent years, his practice has focused on cross-cultural storytelling, with ongoing attention to evolving content formats and aesthetic shifts in international markets. His work seeks to integrate the visual sensitivity and narrative intuition of Chinese creators into Western production frameworks and aesthetic systems, aiming to develop visual approaches that balance cultural depth with international readability.
Whether collaborating on set or shaping a project’s visual identity, Hanqi approaches cinematography as a practice in service of story and audience experience, rather than a purely technical exercise.
